The different types of hair loss

You notice more hair in the shower. Then your part looks wider, or a small bare spot appears. Is it all the same kind of hair loss?

No. Hair loss can happen in different ways, and the cause matters. Here are five types to know about if you are seeing changes to your hair in San Jose.

1. Pattern Hair Loss

Pattern hair loss often runs in families. It tends to happen slowly.

  • Some people notice a hairline that moves back or a thin spot at the crown.

  • Others notice a wider part or less hair on top of the head.

People of any gender can have pattern hair loss. Treatment may help slow it down, especially when you start early.

2. Extra Hair Shedding

Your hair sheds as part of its normal growth cycle. But after an illness, childbirth, or a very stressful time, you may shed much more than usual. This is called telogen effluvium.

The extra hair may show up in your brush or shower a few months after the event. For many people, the shedding slows and the hair grows back. A doctor can check if something else is also causing it.

3. Patchy Hair Loss

A smooth, round bare patch may be a sign of alopecia areata. It can appear on the scalp, beard, or another part of the body.

Alopecia areata happens when the body’s defense system attacks hair roots by mistake. If you find a new patch, see a dermatologist rather than trying to treat it on your own.

4. Hair Loss From Pulling

Tight ponytails, braids, or other styles that pull on the hair can cause traction alopecia. You may first notice thinning along your hairline.

A hairstyle should not hurt. Loosening a style early can help protect your hair. If thinning keeps going, a dermatologist can check it.

5. Scarring Hair Loss

Some scalp conditions cause swelling that can harm hair roots. This can lead to hair loss that may be permanent. One type can start as a thin spot at the crown.

Get medical help early if you notice hair loss with scalp pain, burning, or a smooth bare area. A dermatologist can check the cause and may be able to keep the hair loss from spreading.

How Do You Know Which Type You Have?

The way your hair looks offers clues, but it cannot give you a sure answer. A dermatologist can examine your scalp and find out what is happening. That helps you choose care that fits your type of hair loss.
