Follicular Hair Transfer - Is Surgery Right for You?

Most men and women experience hair loss as they get older, but the good news is that there are tons of solutions for consumers today. Hair loss can be caused by several different issues, ranging from autoimmune issues to anxiety to male pattern baldness. Our mission here at the New Look Institute is to educate our clients and offer the best cutting-edge hair restoration solutions for men and women.

People often assume that hair loss must be treated with a surgical procedure like a hair transplant or transfer. While surgical transfers are possible, there are also many excellent non-surgical procedures available.

How do surgical hair transfers actually work, and could it be a permanent solution for you? Here is some basic information to consider as you search for your best hair restoration option.

What is Follicular Transfer?

Follicular transfer is a surgical treatment in which donor hair follicles are removed from the back and/or sides of the head, and then are implanted in the areas experiencing hair loss. It can be a permanent solution for hair loss in the right circumstances and when performed by an expert surgeon.
As people age, hair growth slows and hair follicles can begin shrinking. Hair loss occurs when a follicle shrinks so much that it stops producing hair. In layman's terms, this type of hair loss surgery removes healthy hair follicles from discreet places on the scalp and then puts them in parts of the scalp where hair has stopped growing.

Modern surgical procedures have improved significantly over the years, allowing clients to achieve natural looking results through minimally invasive surgery.

What Happens During Surgery?

First, the donor area from which hair is to be removed is anesthetized, usually with a local anesthetic injected into the scalp. Individual hair follicles are then removed with microsurgical needles. Surgeons choose hair from the back and side of the head for obvious aesthetic reasons, but also because those hair follicles tend to be more naturally resistant to shrinkage.

Next, the surgeon numbs the recipient area with an injection, small incisions are made with the microsurgical needles, and the donor follicles are inserted. It then takes several days for the recipient area to heal. As with any procedure, the treated area may be somewhat tender at first, but most people are back to their normal routine within a few days.

The desired outcome is hair that begins to regrow in the recipient area in a natural way.
