Motherhood and Hair Loss: What to Expect

The joys of becoming a mother are many—but so are the trials and challenges! Something many new mothers experience during pregnancy, and then later during breastfeeding, is sudden hair loss. If mothers are not used to experiencing any kind of hair issues before, this could be disheartening. Here are a few things that all moms should know about motherhood and hair loss.

  1. Hair Loss is usually not permanent

Just as a woman’s body won’t stay the way it is when pregnant, but will eventually return to its pre-pregnancy size, and just as many discomforts moms experience will eventually dissipate and become a thing of the past, so will hair loss. It could just be temporary, and most mothers report their hair going back to normal by the time their child is a year old. Take heart!

  2. Consider taking vitamins for hair growth

At different stages of age, the body needs different vitamins and medicines to help it stay on track. While mothers may be taking all the right prenatal vitamins or medications, they should speak with their doctor about specific vitamins that boost hair growth and nourish cuticles and roots.

  3. It’s okay to wear wigs

If parents have young children, they should have fun with them—wearing wigs and dressing up is one way to feel good about yourself, even when you are experiencing extreme fatigue or hair loss. Women's wigs come in many styles, colors and lengths. Mothers can try which ones they feel most comfortable in.

  4. Pay attention to your own grooming

Many mothers let themselves go and forget about beauty and style. This is understandable—they are focusing all their attention on the new child and family members. But mothers must see the importance of self-care as well, taking the time to try a new hairstyle, make a trip to the hairdresser or salon or go out on dates with their husbands. When women feel good, they look better, too. One thing to remember though, is to go easy on the flat irons, curling irons and harsh chemicals, which may damage hair even more.
