Temporary hair loss, also known as, Telogen Effluvium, is a very common issue among men and women. The good news is that it is completely reversible. In the meantime, you can access a range of products including wigs, toppers and extensions. Our experienced staff has ways for you to keep your hair loss your own little secret.

Why Exactly Am I Losing My Hair?

Thinning or shedding of hair happens when a larger than normal section of scalp shift into the Telogen phase of the hair cycle. The Telogen phase is the resting or shedding phase of your hair's growth cycle. Since more hair is resting that expected fewer numbers or hair follicles are available to grow in the next growing phase. As our hair growing cycle slows down, less new growth occurs and more shedding happens, exposing more scalp.

What Causes This to Happen All the Sudden?

  • Environmental Shocks - meaning something like being in a car crash, physical trauma and even exposure to some toxins. The shock causes your hair follicles to go into the Telogen or resting phase. The hair loss is not immediate and may not be noticed for a couple months. Once the shock is over and life returns to normal your hair will as well. In roughly 6 months, the resting phase will be over and hair will be as good as new in about 12 months. By the way, hormone issues such as pregnancy and menopause can count as environmental shocks too.

  • Persistent Triggers - such as medications and medical treatments. These include some oral contraceptives and anti-depressants. A good rule of thumb is to talk to your doctor after any new medication if you are experiencing odd symptoms and this would include hair loss. An alternate medication may be required to get your hair and scalp back to normal. You should enjoy a healthy diet and avoid harsh dieting which is known to cause an episode of Telogen Effluvium. Another persistent trigger is a constant vitamin deficiency. Healthy eating is far better than simply taking supplements to get these needed components.

Several important vitamins and minerals for hair health and beauty are: vitamins B-6 and B-12, iron and zinc.

  •  Additional Triggers - include periods of anxiety and high stress, excessive heat, illness, smoking and simply over-styling your hair.

Once the trigger has been identified and removed or corrected, your hair will come back to its' natural state. The hard part will probably be identifying the trigger in the first place. With the hectic life you live you might not even realize you are experiencing Telogen Effluvium until you see a large bald area near the part on your scalp. While you are trying to determine what the trigger is and how to fix it, which could take some time, remember we here at New Look Institute have wigs and toppers that will look terrific on you while you keep your secret.
