Are You Worried That You're Prone to Hair Loss?

Are you worried because you see strands of hair on your hairbrush or in your shower drain? Everyone worries about losing hair at one time or another. As we age, hair naturally thins. Some people lose more hair than others as a result of genetics. There are varying causes of hair loss. It's possible a person can be genetically predisposed to hair loss and also caused by something else.

Some things that can make you more prone to hair loss:

  • Disease, especially those of the thyroid. A prolonged thyroid imbalance can cause thinning all over the scalp. It can affect areas of the arms and legs as well. Both men and women suffering from hypothyroidism can experience this type of hair loss.
  • Trauma. People who have gone through a traumatic event, such as a death in the family, or a medical injury such as a car accident. Some people theorize that this is because the body has diverted its efforts elsewhere while a person heals. Telogen effluvium is the term used to describe hair loss caused by medical trauma, shock, or severe stress. This stress of the ordeal causes follicles to go into a resting phase. This hair loss usually happens within a few months of the trauma. Eventually, the hair will begin to regrow as it resumes its natural growth cycle.
  • Autoimmune Disorders. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles and causes large sections of hair to fall out. The hair usually grows back, but some people may experience repeated episodes, causing their hair to thin or be permanent. The disease can cause hair loss all over the body, including the scalp, arms, and legs. According to the National Alopecia Areata Association, it affects as many as 6.8 million people in the United States.
  • High Stress Levels. Research shows that people with high levels of stress also can have telogen effluvium. Stress disrupts the natural growth cycle of your hair. Some people have described quitting a job they hated and discovering that their hair was regrowing or learning to meditate to help reverse their hair loss. Learning to cope with stress is essential for your overall health. If you think that you are losing hair due to the amount of pressure in your life, consider making some significant changes to your lifestyle. Learn meditation, practice self-care and get plenty of sleep and exercise. Doing these things can reduce stress in your life.
  • Medications. One thing that many people may overlook is the warning insert that comes with the drugs that they take daily. Some heart and blood pressure medications, as well as birth control, can cause hair loss as a side effect. If you're not sure about the medicines you take, make sure that you ask your pharmacist.
  • Inflammation. Allergies, a build-up of hair products, or swelling from a fungal infection or other scalp problems can cause hair loss. Chemicals often inflame the scalp and make it difficult for new hairs to grow back. Use gentle, baby shampoo and always rinse with cold water as you massage your scalp, gently.
  • Genetics and Normal, Healthy Aging. It's true that the majority of hair loss occurs because it runs in the family, and it just begins around the late 20s to early 30s. For many of us, a little hair loss is a natural part of healthy aging. For women, this usually means that the hair starts thinning at the hairline. Men, however, typically start balding from the forehead back.
