Synthetic hair vs human hair
There are two main hair types for wigs; synthetic hair and human hair. With these two products, you will get different qualities in appearance as well as different care instructions. Synthetic hair wigs are less expensive than natural hair wigs but come with some restrictions. These wigs are usually are more difficult to style. Because of the material they are made with, it is typically not safe to use hot styling tools with your wig. They also tend to be heavier than their natural counterparts.
Conversely, human hair wigs can be styled just as you would your natural hair. Curling irons and straighteners are fine. Additionally, you will usually achieve a more natural look with human hair wigs.
Wig construction
You will find many choices when it comes to wig construction. These include:
Lace Front: A lace front wig is composed partially of lace and partly of another, thicker material. As implied by the name, the hair at the front of the wig is hand-tied into a lace material, providing a natural hairline. The benefit of this wig is its natural appearance and high quality. The main drawback is that the lace does not continue to the back of the wig, making updos an issue.
Lace Cap: If the lack of a lace back is an issue, you can elect to purchase a full lace cap. This will provide a more natural all-around appearance. Unfortunately, the construction will provide less support in the back and the wig will come with a higher price tag.
Monofilament: A monofilament wig is similar to a lace front cap. The hairs are hand tied to a nylon/lace cap. The material is such that it provides a very natural appearance. These wigs do come at a higher price tag, but also with superior quality.
Weft Wigs: Weft wigs are the least expensive and most accessible option. These wigs are woven by a machine, making them easier and faster to produce. Because they are not hand tied, these wigs provide the least natural appearance and fit.
Customizing your wig
Your wig is your hair. It's important that your hair is not only comfortable but beautiful as well. Know how you want your hair styled and make these preferences known. Do you prefer bangs? Ask for them. Talk to your stylist about your desired color and style and what the final product will look like. With human hair wigs, there are many natural colors available. You also have the option to color your wig, just as you would your own. Again, if you want the most flexibility with styling your wig, you should choose a wig made with human hair.
Get your wig custom-fitted
For the most natural appearance, it is important that you have your wig custom fit to your head. A wig too big will slip and slide around, where a wig too small will not only be uncomfortable but also can leave unsightly lines and look unnatural. The goal of a wig is to give the appearance of natural hair. To do this, the wig must be fit to yourhead. Your stylist will work with you to find the right fit. Know how they need to be maintained
Different wigs have different care instructions. A synthetic wig requires less maintenance when it comes to storage and styling. The material on the wig can tear or develop creases which are difficult to repair. This type of wig should be stored on a wig stand or mannequin head. Lace wigs also require regular maintenance, including shampoo and conditioner.
